The basics of inspecting plumbing.
Inspecting a house for water leaks in the plumbing is important to ensure the integrity of the house and prevent water damage. Here are the steps to follow:
- Check the water meter: Turn off all the water in the house and check the water meter. If the meter is still running, it indicates that there is a water leak.
- Inspect the visible plumbing: Check all visible plumbing pipes for leaks, rust, or corrosion. Look for damp spots or water stains on the walls or ceilings.
- Check the water pressure: High water pressure can cause leaks. Use a water pressure gauge to measure the water pressure. The normal range is 40-80 psi. If the pressure is higher than 80 psi, it can cause leaks.
- Check the toilets: Check for leaks at the base of the toilets. You can do this by adding a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If the water in the toilet bowl changes color, it indicates that there is a leak.
- Check faucets and showerheads: Check for leaks around faucets and showerheads. Turn off the water and check for drips.
- Check appliances: Check appliances that use water such as washing machines, dishwashers, and refrigerators. Look for leaks or moisture around these appliances.
- Check the water heater: Check the water heater for leaks or corrosion. Look for damp spots or water stains on the floor around the water heater.
- Check for a date on the Hot Water tank and know that a hot water tank only lasts about 10 years, your insurance company will probably ask you how old the hot water tank is and may require you to get a new one before they insure your new house.
- This will take some time, but you will need to know where the main shut off is for the water supply to your home. This shut off is normally outside of the house towards the street. There should be a meter on it. take a look at the meter and write down the number on it, make sure all sources of water are shut off in the house, for a good 30 minutes. No flushing toilets, running the water or any appliances that use water. 30 minutes after writing down the number the number should be unchanged. If the number is climbing this could be a serious problem.
By following these steps, you can inspect a house for water leaks in the plumbing and identify any issues that need to be addressed. If you find any leaks or suspect a leak, it's important to have a licensed plumber inspect and repair the plumbing.
